two brides wedding home virginia

Private Home Wedding | Summer Wedding in McLean, Virginia

Every wedding is special. Weddings held at home are super special. And when I get to work with two brides getting married at a childhood home, I know that the wedding day is going to be amazing, and the wedding photos from Heather Ryan are going to be beautiful.

As I mentioned, this wedding features two brides, K and L. Which means we get double of all the pretty things: wedding rings, bridal bouquets, wedding dresses, and shoes, just to name a few.

K and L got married at L’s childhood home. The home has such a great front and back yard. The wedding ceremony was in the front yard. The cocktail reception was on the pebbled-patio that surrounds the home. The tented reception was on the driveway next to the car-port.

Wedding Ceremony

As it was a hot and sticky July day, we made sure to have cold drinks available when guests arrived. L and her father collected bamboo from the backyard and built this chuppah for the wedding ceremony. L’s mom affixed the fabric and Growing Wild added some floral embellishments. L’s dad used to be a local politician, so the wedding ceremony programs were designed to be an homage to his old campaign posters.

Wedding Reception

At first we thought we would try to tent the side and back of the home. But when I did the initial inspection (in the snow – which is a recurring theme with the home weddings that I work on!) it was immediately obvious that we should tent on the driveway, next to the carport. We took advantage of the blacktop and avoided spending on a tent floor. We dressed up the carport, brought in some extra lighting, and created a bonus space for guests to mingle in.

Want to know a secret? Around 3 pm on the afternoon of the wedding, there was a 20 minute downpour of rain. Buckets of rain. Pouring into the tent. I was legit bailing out the tent with a broom and buckets. It all turned out fine in the end; we knew it was going to pass, but it sure did slow down the set up.
